Anyone who is staff or works with children, children or vulnerable adults is required to go through a Safe Sanctuaries training once a year. This training take about an hour and includes paperwork for us to run a background check.
The reason we do this is to ensure that we are providing a safe place for children, youth and vulnerable adults to come. The word sanctuary means a sacred place, it is something that physically protects from danger. A sanctuary is a place of refuge, protection and shelter from danger or hardship. We are called as Christians to create this safe sanctuariesfor our children, youth and adults. In 1996 the General Conference of the United Methodist Church adopted the Safe Sanctuaries plan. This was adopted to help reduce the risk of abuse in the church and also to give children/youth a sanctuary to come to if they have or are experiencing abuse in the past. It was also adopted to give abusers a sanctuary to come to for healing.
