BLT (Bible, Learning, Teaching)
Leader: Dulaney Wood (dwood007@@aol.com)
Location: Room 1 (just off the Fellowship Hall)
The BLT class does 6 to 8 week studies by outstanding scholars and writers. We will have a short 20 to 30 minute video that is followed by class discussion. Class is formatted so that study ahead of time or attendance every week is not required. Each lesson can stand on its own. We have done studies by Max Lucado, Ray Vander Lann, Jennie Allen, John Ortberg, Rob Bell, Jessica LaGrone, James Moore, Kyle Idleman and many others. We will have special Advent and Easter studies. All of our studies are intended to help us grow in our walk with Christ. We strive to become better Christians in our life, our work, and our relationships. The BLT class welcomes you and would love for you to visit or come and join us. We will finish up our Summer programming in August and will kick off our new year on the second Sunday in September. At that time we will preview our year’s worth of programming with video trailers and an outline of each study we will be doing. It is a great time to see what we will be studying. We look forward to seeing you!

The Forum Class follows a Bible-based dated curriculum. This fall our study is focused on the Book of Acts, Chapters 1-15. The Theme is “Experiencing Power: Stories from the Early Church.” It will explore ways in which the early church encountered the transforming power of God and discover the ways we can experience the same power in our lives today. The make-up of the class is older adults, many of whom are long-time members of First Church, but that is not a limitation or requirement at all. Any age-group is welcome.
Leader: Dr. Mike Powers (email@example.com)
Location: Room 14
We are excited to be re-kicking off this class this fall! Mike is looking forward to leading the group through a study and discussion on The Gospel of John. This class is open to all.

We seek to learn more about how we fit in the narrative of God’s Story and how discipleship fits in our homes. This fall we will be reading A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson. “Since Eugene Peterson first wrote this spiritual formation classic nearly forty years ago, hundreds of thousands of Christians have been inspired by its call to deeper discipleship. As a society, we are still obsessed with the immediate; new technologies have only intensified our quest for the quick fix. But Peterson’s time-tested prescription for discipleship remains the same―a long obedience in the same direction.
Following Jesus in this way requires a deepening life of prayer, and throughout history Christians have learned to pray from the Psalms. Peterson finds encouragement for today’s pilgrims in the Songs of Ascents (Psalms 120-134), sung by travelers on their way to worship in Jerusalem. With his prophetic and pastoral wisdom, Peterson shows how the psalms teach us to grow in worship, service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community, and blessing.”
This class is open to all.

Young Professionals Class
Leaders: Eric & Jean Ezell (email@example.com)
Location: Rokeby Conference Room
We discuss various topics that are current in today’s news and how that relates to our walk with God. We also talk about the ministries First Church Downtown is involved in and how we can help as individuals, couples, or a class. Truly, we go off the cuff with discussions like: finances and what the Bible teaches, friendships, witnessing in the workplace, handling in-law demands, sportsmanship in the Bible, getting to know the church staff, etc. We love being together and welcome you to join us!
Trying to Find the Right Fit?
At First Church, our priority for Spiritual growth is that each member and visitor finds a community of fellow disciples in which God is calling him or her to grow deeper in faith. Thus we encourage you to visit various Sunday School classes and small groups in which you have interest until you discover this call. Interested in starting a new group?
